Pennant Hills High School – Hall AV Upgrade

Case Study
Client:
Department of Education NSW
Date:
2024
At Beyond Network Solutions, we were entrusted with the task of overhauling the entire audio-visual system at Pennant Hills high school.
The project aimed to enhance the learning and theatre experiences for both students and teachers while leveraging some of the school’s existing high-quality hardware. This extensive project involved upgrading the AV infrastructure, implementing cutting-edge technology, and ensuring that the system was simple enough for users to operate without extensive technical training. Our team took a holistic approach, managing the project from consultation to post-installation support, ensuring all components were seamlessly integrated.
Challenges
The primary challenge in this retrofit project was installing a rigging system capable of supporting heavy-duty AV equipment, including a line array and truss, without compromising the integrity of the existing structure. The solution required careful planning, structural engineering, and coordination with external partners.

Key Solutions & Innovations
Rigging System & Structural Integration:
In collaboration with RISE Pacific, we engineered a custom rigging solution using load cells to monitor truss weight and prevent overload. The rigging points were securely integrated into the existing structure, with annual inspections ensuring ongoing safety and certification.
FBT Line Array & Audio Coverage:
To ensure optimal sound coverage throughout the hall, we mapped the FBT line array in Ease, a leading acoustics simulation software. This allowed us to accurately plan for sound delivery, ensuring clear audio coverage of the mezzanine level without the need for delay speakers, resulting in a more efficient and streamlined setup.
AV Control System with Dante Integration:
The AV control system was designed to be both intuitive and flexible. Users can easily toggle between simple touchscreen control and advanced settings, where audio is routed from the Q-SYS DSP to the rear mixing desk via Dante. This eliminates the need for constant re-patching of hardware, streamlining workflow and reducing setup time.
Lighting with GrandMA 3 Console:
To provide students with real-world experience, we integrated the GrandMA 3 lighting console, an industry-standard lighting control system. This allows students to gain valuable skills in theatre lighting that can easily transition into
live production environments.
Crestron NVX for Video & Audio Routing:
We implemented Crestron NVX, a powerful video routing system that simplifies complex setups by consolidating audio and video into a single cable. Audio is de-embedded through AES67 into the Q-SYS DSP, giving the school precise control over video presentations and eliminating the need for multiple cables.
Power Distribution by LSC:
For safe and efficient power distribution across the trussing system, we partnered with LSC to ensure secure power management, supporting the AV system while maintaining safety standards.
Patching System for Hands-on Learning:
We designed an intuitive patching system around the hall that allows students to practice and learn traditional audio and video
patching techniques. This hands-on experience ensures they gain a deeper understanding of signal flow and equipment setup.
Communication System:
The installation of a Jands partyline system enables seamless communication between stage managers, operators, and show callers,
facilitating smooth operations during events and performances.
Reduced Reliance on External AV Services:
By implementing this comprehensive AV system, the school now has the capability to run musicals and productions independently,
significantly reducing the need for external AV hires and allowing the students and staff to manage events more efficiently.
Outcome & Impact
This project transformed the school’s AV capabilities, enhancing both educational and theatrical experiences. Teachers and students now benefit from a robust, scalable AV system that not only meets their current needs but also accommodates future growth. The integration of industry-standard technology, such as GrandMA 3 and Crestron NVX, provides
students with valuable exposure to profession grade equipment, preparing them for careers in AV and live production. Additionally, the easy-to-use patching system and AV control interface enable seamless operation, allowing staff to focus on their primary teaching objectives without getting bogged down in technical complexities.
